As a boy, the filmmaker’s father, H. N. Shantha Murthy, ran away from home to escape the extreme poverty of his Indian village. He traveled the country in search of work. By chance, at a hotel in Delhi, he encountered an American couple visiting from Houston, Texas. He moved there with them and worked as a gas station attendant in Texas, struggling to make a living. While telling his story, weaving together home videos and phone conversations, the filmmaker reflects on her own experiences as the daughter of immigrants (her mother is from the Philippines), trying to build a life in New York City. The film is an intimate love letter—a meditation on a complicated father-daughter relationship and a poignant tribute to the immigrant working class. Says Murthy, “I made this film to remind us of our humanity, how the power of kindness can change a person’s life, and to express our love for each other while we can.”
