Synopsis
Five year-old Lawand has been profoundly deaf since birth and cannot communicate with those around him. He would like to find people who are like him and will understand him. With his family, he undertakes a treacherous journey from Iraq to Derby, UK, where they settle at the Royal School for the Deaf. But this new life comes under threat when the family faces deportation. Along with members of the Derby community, they must fight to stay in their new home.

Edward Lovelace’s features and documentaries are critically acclaimed. Name Me Lawand (2022) won Best International Film at 2023 Hot Docs, received a Grierson Award Best Feature Documentary’ nomination at the 2022 BFI London Film Festival, and has been nominated for a One World Media ‘Refugee Reporting’ Award. His other films include Human Made Stories (2020, documentary series, co-directed with James Hall); A Song Still Inside (2020, short narrative); The Possibilities Are Endless (2014, feature film, co-directed with James Hall); Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012, feature documentary); and Werewolves Across America (2010, feature documentary)
