Synopsis
On the day of her release from a psychiatric facility, Mira returns to her mother’s home in Brooklyn for her grandmother’s birthday. But when she arrives, she discovers that her sister has told the family that she was on a trip to Florida. This portrayal of a young woman’s re-entry into the world offers a glimpse into struggles around mental illness, an issue often silenced and pathologized in Arab culture.

Director's Bio
Darine Hotait, born in Beirut, holds an MFA in film directing and screenwriting from the Art Center College of Design in California. She also attended the Sundance Rawi Screenwriters Lab and the New York Foundation for the Arts Immigrant Fellowship.
Her short film I Say Dust (2016) premiered at Outfest and won Best Short Film at the Med Film Festival in Rome. It was acquired by the Sundance Channel, BBC, and AMC Networks. Her short film Like Salt (2018) won the Oscar-qualifying Best Short Film award at the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival. Tallahassee (2021), which premiered at the Blackstar Film Festival, was acquired by The New Yorker. In 2022, Darine was named to Disney’s List of Directors on the Rise. Her most recent film, It’s Complicated (2026), executive-produced by Academy Award-winner Zoe Saldaña, is having its world premiere at Hollyshorts Film Festival.
She is now in development on her feature documentary Land Keepers, supported by the Doha Film Institute. Her honors include the New York Council on the Arts Prize, the Jerome Foundation Award, the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture Grant, and the North Manhattan Arts Alliance Prize.
