Synopsis
English:
Taybet, an elderly Kurdish woman who returns to her village in eastern Turkey, which the state destroyed during the forced displacement of thousands of Kurds in the 1990s. She attempts to rebuild her home and daily life there, while grappling with the weight of memory, and struggles to reclaim dignity in the aftermath of violence. A tribute to endurance, culture, and the ongoing fight for justice.

Umay Işik is a Kurdish documentary filmmaker and photographer from Wan, Bakur, currently based in Los Angeles. His work weaves personal history with broader questions of memory, migration, and belonging. Drawing from years of travel and a deep connection to his roots, Umay’s storytelling blends poetic imagery with grounded social insight. His short documentary Return to Poverty, a quiet portrait of his grandmother’s return to traditional village life, continues his exploration of identity and resilience across generations.
