New York Kurdish Film Festival, 7th edition

NYKFF7

The seventh edition of the New York Kurdish Film Festival was a journey into the heart of Kurdish culture. This weeklong event, running from October 20 to 26, celebrated the indomitable spirit of the Kurdish people.

The seventeen films chosen for screening came from all four parts of Kurdistan plus the diaspora. In the historic Village East by Angelika theater, audiences experienced this diverse array of cinematic treasures.

Some of the films were short, some feature length. Some were documentaries, others fiction. But all spoke to Kurdish identity and the struggles that have shaped it. Several directors were present and gave Q&As after their films were screened. Several too sent us videos with their greetings to NYKFF7.

In addition to the films, the festival presented other cultural events as well: dance, music, a book talk, and a children’s program.

The year 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the Lausanne Treaty, a historical injustice that denied recognition to the Kurdish people’s land, language, and identity.  But for that century, Kurdish people have not only resisted but channeled the power of artistic expression to survive under adversity and emerge stronger than ever. NYKFF7 paid homage to that power and honored Kurdish resilience and creativity.
