Synopsis:
When Janet Biehl edited her late partner Murray Bookchin’s approach to participatory politics in the 1990s, she never imagined that this work would one day take her halfway across the globe. In this film, Janet explores how Murray’s political theories were adapted to ignite a women-led revolution and bring about remarkable societal transformations in North-East Syria. With the political revolution of Rojava largely neglected by the media and the spotlight on Syria declining, this film helps to shine light on a powerful struggle for gender equality and democracy.

Danny Mitchell (co-director and producer) is an independent documentary filmmaker based in London. He makes character-driven films involving social and political issues. These themes range from the economic crisis in Iceland to following guerrilla soldiers through the peace process in Colombia. His films have been shown at film festivals around the world.

Ross Domoney (co-director) is a multi-award-winning freelance filmmaker and video journalist who is known for humanizing political stories around the world. He has worked in Syria, Ukraine, Turkey, and the DRC to name a few. He is a passionate teacher of documentary filmmaking. His work has been published by the Guardian, ITV, Al Jazeera, Field of Vision, The Intercept, and BBC2. He received an audience award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival and a Royal Television Society award.
