Born in Silêmanî in 1975, he makes films that work with vernacular forms, oral histories, modes of encounter, and political situations. They refer to stories told by family members and friends, found situations, and everyday forms. Hiwa K currently lives in Germany.

This event will screen three of Hiwa K’s films:

Pre-Image (Blind as the Mother Tongue) (2017, 18 minutes)
In this film, Hiwa K simulates the experience of walking through foreign territory, using an “object-sculpture” made of stick and motorbike mirrors that he balances on his nose. The object acts as a navigation device and an “adaptation tool” to familiarize himself with unknown spaces.

View From Above (2017, 12 minutes)
This film focuses on the difficulties that Kurds from the “unsafe zone,” the area of Iraq outside Başur, experience in qualifying as refugees. In interviews, they are interrogated about small details of their home cities. Many have difficulty proving that they come from the unsafe zone and are sent back.

This Lemon Tastes of Apple (2011, 13 minutes)
On April 17, 2011, the last day of the two-month action in Silêmanî, Hiwa K participated in a civil protest. He took to the stage and performed a motif by Ennio Morricone on harmonica, with Daroon Othman playing the guitar. During the performance he inhaled teargas through the harmonica, internalizing the basis for the protest. The protest was brutally smashed by the armed forces of the local government.

The screenings will be followed by a conversation between Hiwa K in person and e-flux’s Anton Vidokle.

Hiwa K, Film Screening and Conversation with Anton Vidokle Date and time: Saturday, March 29, at 5pmPlace: e-flux screening room, 172 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205Information: visit the e-flux website, or write to program@e-flux.com This program presented features the work of Kurdish artist Hiwa K.
